First Post
My interests are human-computer interactions, creativity studies, user experience design and design education.
For those of us who practice User Experience design, we often don't seem to get the chance to be creative. People don't think of Information Architects as being creative talent; creativity is associated with visual design, branding and Creative Direction or worse, it is thought unnecessary and suspiciously connected to budget and time overruns and general flaky-ness. This blog is devoted to exploring how creativity informs user experience design in terms of motivation, design process, design thinking and results. In other words, I'm for it.
Before going any further in exploring these topics, its a good idea to define what I mean by User Experience Design and Creativity. Treated broadly, User Experience Design is the design of how people interact with systems. More specifically, it deals with the design of software, hardware and at times, the environments within which the interaction takes place. Creativity has lots of definitions, but I will treat it broadly as a process with novel or unexpected results. By no means do I dismiss traditional forms of creativity and art-making, but go further by realizing that creativity is a state of mind, a goal and is achievable by everyone in any endeavor.
